Crisis Intervention and Emergency Psychiatric Services are available 24 hours a day in conjunction with the Psychiatric Emergency Screening Program for Bergen County, Inc. Hackensack University Medical Center is a satellite screening center providing outreach services for patients. This program provides emergency care and screens patients for admissions to the Adult Inpatient Stabilization Unit. WHAT WE DO Patients want to know that if psychiatric symptoms are present during medical admission (related to or independent of the stress of medical procedures), psychiatric consultation is available. Hackensack University Medical Center provides psychiatric consultations for patients on the medical and surgical units of the medical center. In collaboration with the primary medical physician, psychiatric evaluation and treatment can be initiated to speed recovery and reduce distress. Advanced practice nurses, as part of the team, provide clinical services in addition to bereavement counseling, crisis intervention, and family counseling around the medical event. Patients want the option of short-term inpatient management of acute psychiatric symptoms. Hackensack University Medical Center houses a 24-bed stabilization unit for short-term psychiatric treatment. It offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment programs including medication, psychoeducation and skills groups, and individual psychotherapy. Consumers want to know that access to safe intensive treatments such as Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) are available to them through Hackensack University Medical Center. ECT is used to treat a wide variety of disorders. It has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment tool for people who are not having an adequate response to medication or whose medical conditions limit medication alternatives.
