What We Do

General Surgery in Hackensack University Medical Center's Department of Surgery emcompasses a comprehensive array of invasive and non-invasive surgeries for diagnostic, as well as treatment purposes.

Skilled surgeons perform a variety of procedures on almost all parts of the body, including the head and neck, extremities, and abdomen. Procedures range from the removal of simple skin lesions to complex resections and removal of major organs.

Surgeons often work in unison with other medical specialists to form a multi disciplinary healthcare team in order to effectively manage the many facets of their patients’ conditions. Depending on each patient’s unique needs, our surgeons may collaborate with specialists in anesthesiology, gastroenterology, cardiology, nephrology, radiology, or experts in other fields of medicine.

Performing approximately 8,000 procedures annually, the medical center employs state-of-the-art equipment for well-established techniques as well and innovative ones to achieve the best possible results for the patients we serve.

As an affiliate of The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School, The Department of Surgery features an active Surgical Education program with a third-year surgical clerkship that provides a clinical introduction to general surgery. The program offers broad exposure to same day general surgery as well as sophisticated general, vascular, pediatric, and thoracic surgery procedures. It also features fellowship level training in laparoendoscopic, robotic surgery, and bariatric surgery, with new programs starting soon in surgical oncology, breast disease, and vascular surgery.

The surgical field is characterized by rapid change as new equipment and techniques are continuously being invented and refined. To keep up-to-date with the ever-changing healthcare environment in the best interests of our patients, The Department of Surgery holds weekly Grand Rounds, often featuring nationally and internationally renowned guest speakers, and it sponsors many conferences each year.
