What We Do
The Department of Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center offers a comprehensive array of services that range from general surgery to specialized surgical programs.
The department emphasizes the use of the latest technological equipment and procedures to achieve the most positive outcomes for its patients.
Examples include surgery through minimal access ports, otherwise known as “keyhole” surgery. Through the use of minimally invasive techniques, a patient might return home in just one or two days, with minimal pain and blood loss, in contrast to traditional procedures that might require a one to two week hospital stay and more aggressive management of post-operative pain.
Surgical enhancements also include robotically assisted surgery. By inserting robotic arms that end in tiny “hands” into the patient, tissue can be sewn and knots can be tied using much finer instruments than those available in conventional surgery. Surgeons operate the robot from a computer located outside of the surgical area.
These advanced tools are put to use against the backdrop of a state-of-the-art surgical suite that boasts 30 operating rooms, including new rooms that allow the surgical team to control equipment by either voice or a touch screen. The surgeon can also regulate the room and/or surgical lights, control the equipment used during laparoscopic procedures, take pictures, video, or DVDs to document pathology, as well as call up the patient's X-rays, MRI, CAT scans to be viewed on a LCD monitor. Additionally, the rooms allow nurses to focus more time on the patient rather than moving and setting up equipment.
In order to meet the needs of our dynamic community, Hackensack University Medical Center's Department of Surgery offers many subspecialty divisions. They are:Breast Surgery
